Title Information:

Each state has its own rules and regulations governing vehicle titles. You must familiarize yourself with your state’s procedures regarding the reconstructed title process. Below we have links to information about each state’s reconstruction process.

  • Good Title / Clean Title: A good title, also known as a clean title or clear title, designates that the vehicle has not been issued a salvage title in Pennsylvania or any other previous state. Some states issue clean titles to insurance companies if the damage to the vehicle is under a certain percentage of its value, check with your state to determine if they accept clean titles in an insurance company’s name.
  • Salvage Title: A salvage title is assigned to a vehicle that has been declared a total loss from Fire, Vandalism, Collision, Theft or Flood. A salvage vehicle such as a theft or flood may have minimal damage or no damage at all. A salvage vehicle cannot be registered or legally driven until a reconstructed title has been issued.
  • New York 907A: A New York 907A is an ownership form assigned by an insurance company to a vehicle that has been declared a total loss from Fire, Vandalism, Collision, Theft or Flood in New York State. Most other states including Pennsylvania will not accept a New York 907A as proof of ownership. Upon purchasing a vehicle with a NY 907A you must first make an appointment for a Salvage Vehicle Inspection in New York, instructions can be found here: http://www.dmv.ny.gov/salvage.htm and http://www.dmv.ny.gov/salvexam.htm. After you have passed the New York Salvage Vehicle Inspection you will be mailed a New York Salvage Certificate which you can take to your state to complete the reconstructed title process.
  • Non-repairable / Parts Only / Export Only / Bill of Sale: A non-repairable or parts only title indicates that the vehicle cannot be titled or registered in the U.S. again. These vehicles may be exported in most cases.
  • Reconstructed Title: A reconstructed title is issued when a vehicle has been repaired and has passed its state’s reconstructed title procedure. Once a reconstructed title has been issued the vehicle can be insured, registered and driven like any other vehicle but the title will always be branded with a reconstructed or previous salvage notation.

NAM: NAM is a title designation which means “Not Actual Miles”. Often this is marked on a vehicle which has a digital odometer which may have been inoperable due to the damage to the vehicle or no key.
